Apr 13,2022
There's nothing more comfortable than snuggling up on the sofa in fall with a thick, cute sherpa blanket! This soft material is great for cooler days, but keeping it clean can be a little tricky. If you end up with a fluffed sherpa fabric, you may want to learn how to wash it without destroying the sherpa fabric! In this article, you'll get step-by-step instructions on how to clean and care for this unique material.

How to wash a sherpa blanket without ruining It?

Taking a few extra precautions will maintain the soft, plush texture that makes your Sherpa so special.

The good news is that you can wash your blanket without doing any harm to it! The bad news is that if you wash your blanket the wrong way, you may end up with a flat, messy mat instead of a fluffy one.

Note that you should always read the manufacturer's care instructions on the label affixed to the blanket before attempting any type of wash. The steps described here work for most sherpa fabrics, but follow the directions on the label!

Read on to learn all the best tips and tricks so you can wash your sherpa blanket like a pro!

Preprocessing

The best way to remove stains or spots from a sherpa blanket is to pretreat it before washing. Here are two ways to do a simple cleaning!

For non-oily stains, use dish soap.

1. Blot the stain with a clean paper towel. If the stain is still damp, this will absorb any excess moisture. Try not to rub, just tap the blanket with a paper towel!

2. Just put a few drops of dish soap on the stain. Again, tap the soap with another clean paper towel to allow it to sink into the fibers.

3. Rinse the stained area with cold water.

4. As the area dries, you may see it become flat and matted. Don't worry! You can fix this by running a pre-treating cycle in the washing machine.

For oily stains, it may be better to use baby powder or cornstarch to absorb the oil.

1. Blot the stain with a clean paper towel. If the stain looks dry, you can skip this step!

2. Sprinkle a thin layer of cornstarch or baby powder on the surface of the stain. You don't need much, just enough to cover the stain completely.

3. Gently wipe the powder on the surface of the fabric with your fingers.

4. Let the dry powder sit overnight.

5. If possible, use a small vacuum cleaner with a nozzle to suck up loose powder.

6. Finally, follow the guide below to wash the blanket in the washing machine!

After removing the stain, you can learn how to wash the sherpa blanket.

Machine wash

1. Once you know how to wash a sherpa blanket, you will find these steps very easy! The main trick is to dodge elements that could damage the blanket in the process. Set the washer to a fine or gentle cycle.

2. If possible, also select the cold water option.

3. Put the blanket in the washing machine, but do not add any other items, such as clothing or bedding. The extra bulk in the washing machine can increase the friction of the blanket, resulting in tons of tiny, annoying little bumps in the sherpa fabric! Also, your blanket is at risk of staining.

4. Add a mild liquid detergent. A fabric softener should not be used as it will stick to synthetic fibers and cause matting. Also, you can't use powdered detergent, which may stick to the blanket instead of dissolving.

5. Finally, turn on the washer and let it go through the normal cycle!
An essential element of the machine wash process is to remember to use cold water. Hot water can damage your blanket. Also, use mild detergents and do not use additives like fabric softeners or bleach.

Hand wash

If you have the time and space, hand washing will minimize damage to your sherpa fleece! While more effort is required, this process provides the safest option to protect your fluffy blanket.

1. Fill a clean tub, large basin, or kitchen sink with cold water. Warm or hot water may damage the wool.

2. Soak the blanket in cold water. Shake lightly with your hands to make sure the fabric is wet.

3. Just add a few drops of mild laundry detergent to the water. Stir the soap into the water by hand to create a lather.

4. At this stage, use both hands to push the blanket folds through the water, exposing all fabrics to the soap. No need to squeeze or rub the blanket too much.

5. Drain the water. Note: You will have a heavy soaked blanket on your hands during this step! Lift it up and gently press the blanket between your hands to remove as much moisture as possible.

6. Follow the recommended drying steps below!

One thing to avoid in the process is squeezing your sherpa blanket into a bucket or basin that is too small. Hand washing gives your blanket a delicate, friction-free wash. If you squish it, you will destroy all those benefits by squashing all the fibers!

How to dry sherpa blanket?

If you have a clothesline, the best way to dry your sherpa blanket is to let it air dry outside in the fresh air! Just use mild plastic clothespins, as wooden ones can get caught on the wool. If you don't have a clothesline, you can drape a wet blanket over a drying rack, or even the backs of several folding chairs side by side. If none of the above methods work, you can toss it on your shower curtain rod and let it dry in your bathroom.

If you're in a hurry or don't have space to dry the blanket, you can safely put the blanket in the dryer. Just make sure you use the tumble drying setting. This setting does not apply any heat.
